the argument of spring and winter

one time i had a dream that there was an argument between winter and spring. winter didn't want to move out of the way, and spring was being very indignant.

winter claimed that since he was quite ancient the world naturally belonged to him. he was powerful and had reigned for a very long time. people knew what to expect with him. spring was feeble and uncertain, he argued. she was too frail to take command of the world.

spring demonstrated that although she was young she had the great advantage of flexibility. if there were going to be high winds and rough rains ahead, she could bend and not break, while with winter's ice everything would be solid and snap with sudden blows.

they continued on like this for awhile.

finally, winter decided that it was time to go. he was tired and wanted to sleep. spring came along with white flowers and red breasted robins who sang their little songs. green shoots erupted from the ends of branches of the oak trees. the shepherds took out their pipes and played happy tunes. the tulips started to bloom and the garden became a whirlwind of colour. there were honey bees flying all over the place. the good people danced on the lawn at night.

everyone seemed to be in a good mood except bubbles my pet-fish. he said there was a great deal of pollen in the air that was irritating his allergies and making his eyes water. he said that he hoped that it would rain and wash the pollen away.
